The Centro de Entrenamiento en Situaciones Críticas (CESC) is a multidisciplinary educational unit of the Hospital Universitario Marqués de Valdecilla in Santander (Spain).
Our mission is to enhance patient safety by means of training health care providers using patient simulation.
Was donated in 1997 by the Marcelino Botín Foundation (www.fundacionmbotin.org) and we have recently celebrated our 10th anniversary.

The Centre has an Executive Director, an Educational Director and a Project Director, 20 medical instructors, 1 Anesthesia Resident and 7 nurses. They work partial time in the design and development of the curriculum and research. Also more than 10 instructors from different countries, backgrounds and positions collaborate in the CESC.
In 2001 we moved to the Administrative building (Pabellón 21) situated by the Hospital, where now operate on 360 m².
As teaching tools we are currently using two full scale simulators, standardized patients and several part task trainers.
We focus on training and research activities related to postgraduate medical doctors and nurses. But also organize activities for medical and nursing students, and other health care providers and corporations. More than 6,000 people have participated in the Center activities since the beginning.
Our areas include Anesthesiology, Critical Care, Pediatrics, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Pain management, and Nursing. We mainly focus on clinical high performance team, decision making, and organizational behavior.
We hosted the 2002 SESAM annual meeting. We organized the 1st Spanish Meeting on Clinical Simulation in 2005, and we will host the first European Course offered by the Institute for Medical Simulation of Boston (USA) in May 2008.
