The Centre for Clinical Practice in Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust specialises in multi-disciplinary clinical education and training. The centre is comprised of Resuscitation, Simulation, Undergraduate Medicine, Clinical Skills and Maternity Clinical Skills which work together to provide a comprehensive education and development facility. Together we offer a range of courses including basic to advanced life support, clinical skills teaching, Maternity clinical and emergency skills and updates as well as high-fidelity patient simulation training including crisis resource management.

Our Team:

Our dedicated simulation team is comprised of a Simulation Nurse as well as a Simulation Medical Technical Officer who ensure the smooth execution and behind the scenes running of all simulation courses and an Information Systems Developer responsible for IT as well as managing the online booking and course feedback systems. Our simulation faculty includes medical professionals from a variety of clinical backgrounds who have all been trained in simulation educational techniques.

What we are using:

The Centre for Clinical Practice comprises two designated, simulation suites, complete with functional piped medical gas supplies and suction, anaesthetic machine, resuscitation trolley and telephone. Facilitators direct the scenarios from behind one way glass in dedicated control rooms attached to each simulation suite. We also have four seminar rooms suitable for presentations, two of which contain comprehensive AV systems capable of providing live video feed from the simulation theatres. We have a variety of manikins available to simulate a range of patients from newborn infants to adults. Currently our high-fidelity manikins include:

  • Adult (METI HPS, Laerdal SimMan & Gaumard Noelle)
  • Paediatric (METI PediaSIM, Laerdal SimBaby & Gaumard Scientific Baby HAL)

The Resuscitation and Clinical Skills departments also have various manikins including Laerdal ResusciAnne and part-task training models.

What we are doing:

We are the principal provider of Undergraduate Acute Care simulation courses for final year Imperial College medical students in London. This course provides training in the management of common medical emergencies and is linked in with their emergency department clinical placement.

We also provide simulation courses in association with the London Deanery for qualified doctors in their first and second years of practice. These courses aim to build on clinical management skills as well as highlight important human factors issues such as communication, teamwork and leadership.

We offer a number of anaesthetics courses including Anaesthetic Crisis Resource Management (ACRM), Safer Sedation, Crisis in Obstetric Anaesthesia, and Paediatrics Anaesthesia.

In addition to these courses which are open to external candidates, we deliver a range of bespoke courses designed to meet the unique educational needs of our hospital departments and individual staff.

We are also currently involved in research projects and human factors engineering studies utilising simulation.
