The Medical Education Technology Center of Riga Stradiņš University (METC) was opened in 2013. It marked the first time in Latvia when the approach of simulation-based education was introduced in medical and health care education. 

The mission of METC is to be a leader in the implementation of the simulation-based medical education (SBMI) approach, to provide the highest quality education to existing and future health care professionals to promote patient safety and improve the quality of health care in Latvia. 

The vision of METC is to be a modern SBMI center of national importance, also recognized in Europe for SBMI implementation, research and innovation. 

The aim of METC is to improve patient safety and care, education of current and future medical and healthcare professionals, and promote research in simulation-based medical education. 

The Medical Education Technology Centre offers various learning opportunities, including independent practices for students and residents, professional development programs for healthcare industry professionals, useful courses for society, as well as various lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences. 

METC provides a variety of simulation technologies and learning environments such as:

  • skills acquisition rooms,
  • clinical care rooms,
  • emergency medical department,
  • operating unit;
  • military medicine zone.

At METC various simulations are being enacted on regular basis including simulations in anesthesiology and reanimatology, traumatology and orthopedics, surgery, infectiology, cardiology, pneumonology, family medicine, patient care, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric care, military medicine, and first aid, and interdisciplinary simulations in medical law, communication and teamwork.
