SESAM Member Spotlight |
|||||
This month, we're delighted to feature Professor Stella Major, a British-Armenian family physician and Fellow of the Royal College of General Practice (FRCGP-UK). Currently serving as Professor of Family Medicine Teaching in Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM-Q) in Qatar, she brings extensive international experience in healthcare simulation. Background and Journey into Simulation Professor Major discovered simulation-based education in the early 1990s as a resident family physician in London. A formative experience at Madingley Hall in Cambridge introduced her to the power of simulated patient encounters. As she recalls, "I was totally absorbed by this encounter, and despite it being a simulated surgery, I realized the incredible power that the simulated participant can have in our training journey." Over three decades, she has held faculty positions in the UK, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, where she currently serves as Director of the Clinical Skills and Simulation lab at WCM-Q. Under her leadership, the simulation lab has expanded both in footprint and learning management systems, offering training to over 100 simulation practitioners in Doha and the region. SESAM Experience Her connection with SESAM began in 2018 through collaboration on the EuSim Beginners Instructor Course at WCM-Q. As she shares, "In my 5 years as a member, I feel like I have become part of a growing, nurturing family. This is an annual conference I never miss, and always look forward to meeting friends, learning, and having fun!" Professional Insights Professor Major emphasizes the importance of both technical and non-technical skills in simulation education: "It is NOT just the clinical medicine (technical skills) BUT it's ALSO the use of targeted critical behaviors skills (NON TECHNICAL SKILLS)." Most Rewarding Aspects For Professor Major, the joy comes in witnessing transformative learning moments: "I always enjoy seeing the wow moment, as learners and co-debriefers discover learners' frames, and discover how others think and feel and behave, especially in stressful situations. I think simulation offers this safe space for us to really share and learn together and feel better prepared for our roles in the patient facing world." Future Vision Looking ahead, Professor Major sees SESAM continuing to shape healthcare simulation "By enabling more opportunities for education, collaboration, research and leadership in evidence based education and practice." Her enthusiastic endorsement: "Keep doing what you are doing SESAM! You are GREAT." |
